SHO220 SOCIAL WORK TERMINOLOGY IN ENGLISH I
SPRING SEMESTER, 2011-2012

About the Course
This course aims to help 4th semester of social work students in learning and improving social work related terms in English.
Objectives of the Course
At the end of the semester, each student will be able to do:
  1. Comprehend the essential social work terms in English
  2. Develop a terminology repertoire for the main practice fields of social work, such as child welfare, mental health social work, criminality social work etc.
Teaching Methods
Classes will include lectures and class discussions. Participation and contributions of each student to the lecture will be considered by the instructor. So please, let your voice be heard by your classmates and the instructor. Class discussions will focus on assigned readings and content of lectures by the instructor. Students must have an English-Turkish or English-English dictionary with themselves in every session of the course.
Methods of Evaluation
In order to accomplish the main aim of the course, students are asked to read all listed references and documents not only before the written exams, but also before the lectures. This is the only way of succeeding the course.
A. Written Exams
There will be two written exams: one midterm and one final exam. Exams will be comprehensive, closed book exams that may consist of both objective type (e.g. multiple choice, fill in the blanks, short answer, etc.) and essay questions. Questions will cover all the contents presented before the exam dates including information from lectures by the instructor and required readings. The results and scores of the exams will be announced on the web site of the lecturer (http://drtariktuncay.blogspot.com/) in 15 days after the exam.
B. Term (Second midterm) Paper
Students are expected to:
1.      select one of the main fields of social work,
2.      find at least 10 academic references related to selected field,
3.      prepare a unique and individual paper that includes
3.1.   at least 20 basic social work terms list related to the field with their Turkish translations (e.g., anxiety, therapy in psychiatric social work)
3.2.   write at least 20 unique sample sentences that includes the terms given in the paper.
The final due date for the paper is April, 26 2012. The paper will be evaluated, graded, and returned to the student within two weeks. There will be a 10 point penalty if the paper is turned in late after the final due date.
Grading
Written midterm exam: %25; Term paper: %25; Final exam: %50

Attendance
Students are also expected to be present for every class session of the course. Success in the course depends heavily on one’s attendance and participation in the classroom. Attendance will be checked by ‘the signature list of students’. With reference to H.U. Regulation of Undergraduate Education, students must attend at least 70% theoretical hours of the lectures (article number 16).

Naturally, the course is divided into fifteen weeks of spring semester including examination days. Listed below are the detailed week-by-week topics, required readings of the course. The required reading of the course is Robert L. Barker’s “The Social Work Dictionary” (NASW Press, 4th edition, 1999). In the dictionary, students will be only responsible to learn terms. Person and/or historical events related entries are excluded. At the end of the semester, students will be able to complete most parts of the dictionary. Suggested readings are also given below after the schedule.
